Overview

The superalloy Hastelloy X is a Ni-Cr-Mo alloy with the addition of cobalt and tungsten. Hastelloy X alloy exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 1200 ° C. It can also be used in neutral and reducing atmospheres. Meanwhile, Hastelloy X alloy is resistant to carbonization and nitriding.

Hastelloy X Features

Hastelloy X has the following features:

  • 1) Excellent oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 1200 °C;
  • 2) Good strength under high temperatures;
  • 3) Good formability and weldability;
  • 4) Good resistance to stress corrosion cracking

Hastelloy X welding

Hastelloy X can be welded by a variety of welding technologies such as gas tungsten-arc welding, plasma arc welding (PAW), manual argon arc welding, and metal inert gas shielded welding. However, pulse arc welding is preferred. Before welding, the material needs to be treated with solid solution to remove oxide scale, oil stains and various marks. Areas about 25 mm width near the both sides of the weld need to be polished to bright metal finish. The welding applies low heat input with the interlayer temperature not exceeding 100 °C. Hastelloy X does not require pre-weld and post-weld heat treatment.

Applications of Hastelloy X

Due to its corrosion resistance at high temperatures in various atmospheres and its excellent high-temperature strength, Hastelloy X is widely used in various high temperature environments. Typical applications are as below:

  • 1) Industrial and aviation steam turbines (combustion chambers, rectifiers, structural covers);
  • 2) Industrial furnace components, support rollers, grids, ribbons and radiant tubes;
  • 3) Spiral tube in petrochemical furnace;
  • 4) High temperature gas cooled nuclear reactor.
